EU extends its ban on white asbestos

In 1991 the use of chrysotile or "white" asbestos was banned in 14 categories of product within the EU. For some time the Commission has been seeking to extend the ban to all other products but until recently has been hampered by lack of evidence as to the safety of alternative fibres and conflicting opinion on the seriousness of the risks to health from chrysotile asbestos.
