Economics as Hermeneutics:

Rationality lies at the core of economic explanations. This much should be uncontroversial. Yet economists are seldom able to explicate why rationality is so central to economic understanding and what exactly is meant by it. The official dogma is that rationality is just consistency of choice behaviour, but this behaviourist interpretation is hard to square with the passion with which many economists are ready to defend the foundational explanatory role of rationality.
