Horizontal motions in the Earth's interior can occur according to two mechanisms—elastic recoil during earthquake and creep of fault. In the first case, both limbs of the fault are involved in motion with a velocity close to that of the S-wave (2-3 km/s). In the second case, only one limb is subjected to motion at a rate of a few centimeters per year. Layer-by-layer creep is possible in elastic clayey sequences. Many geologists, geodesists, and seismologists have investigated local-scale horizontal motions in the deep zones of Sakhalin. However, the regional distribution of such motions remains a debatable issue.
