Massflows of Sr and Ba in Groundwaters within the Central Russian Plate

One of the most important issues of modern basic hydrogeology is the investigation of massflows of chemical elements in groundwaters owing to the water-rock interaction that controls the chemical weathering and many exogenous processes. The removal of major components by groundwaters was previously estimated on both the regional and global scales. It is obvious that a more complete understanding of the water-rock interaction is impossible without studying the removal of minor rock components. In this connection, we studied hydrogeochemical features of migration and estimated massflows of Sr and Ba (chemical elements of Group II of the Mendeleev Periodic Table), which are syngenetic components in Upper Devonian and Carboniferous carbonate (partially, sulfate) sequences of the central Russian Plate. This region serves as a watershed between the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Caspian Sea. The largest rivers of European Russia (Volga, Oka, Don, Dnepr, and Zapadnaya Dvina) rise here. In terms of hydrogeology, the study area is the central segment of the Moscow Artesian Basin, whose hydrody-namic and hydrochemical characteristics are predominantly determined by structural and geological features of the Moscow Syneclise.
