Oscillatory zoning, i.e., rhythmically alternating maximum and minimum contents of different components in a crystal or rock, is widespread in nature and has been described in many works (for example). Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain oscillatory zoning in crystals. They include, primarily, the cyclic inhibition of crystal faces by trace elements, which leads to a decrease in its growth rate, and the self-organization of the crystal-boundary layer system.
