Factors Responsible for the Chemical Composition of Water in Small Lakes

The chemical composition of water depends on the integral influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes both in the drainage area and in the basin. In the lack of direct pollution sources, the chemical composition of water in small lakes more distinctly reflects both the zonal and regional specifics of its formation and the global anthropogenic process in the present-day environment. The monitoring system in Russia is primarily designed for observations of the state of large river and lake systems that have economic significance and that are influenced by various sources of sewage. In contrast, the Human Impact on Lake Ecosystems program (EU-LIMPACS) elaborated in Europe pays much attention to the study of small lakes as indicators of probable climatic and environmental changes.
