The existing definitions and classifications of active faults based on geological structure, geomorphological, and even paleoseismogeological data are so rough as to limit their usefulness in attempts to elucidate the spa-tiotemporal regularities of selective activation of faults in the seismoactive regions of the lithosphere for purposes of medium-term earthquake forecast. For the first time, an algorithm is suggested for the study of the regularities of selective activation of seismoactive faults on the real time scale based on geoinformation technologies. The algorithm was tested in the Baikal rift system (BRS).
