The composition of mantle magmas bears important information on mantle chemistry. Available data on compositions of primitive glasses indicate differences in the source composition of basalts of mid-ocean ridges (depleted mantle, DM), oceanic islands and plateau (oceanic plume mantle, OPM), within-plate continental settings (continental plume mantle, CPM), island arcs, and active continental margins. In this paper, we attempted to estimate the average composition of DM, OPM, and CPM types. The average DM composition was evaluated in . The OPM is presently characterized by only the abundance of individual elements in several regions and the first estimates of average composition. The average composition of CPM is poorly studied, and only estimates on the continental lithospheric mantle are available .
