Dynamics of Stresses in the Lithosphere of the Baikal Rift: Episodes of Synchronization

Application of correlation analysis methods to the investigation of the lithosphere evolution dynamics in the Baikal Rift Zone (BRZ) and in three regions within this zone at the present-day (instrumental) stage allowed us to reveal statistically significant episodes of high synchronization between the geophysical processes at the end of the 1960s to the beginning of the 1970s, the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, and the end of the 1980s. The episode at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s is distinguished for its long duration and maximal level of correlation, which gives us the possibility to consider it as the dominating event in the lithosphere of the Baikal Rift. The observed synchronization evidences that rearrangements of stresses in the BRZ lithosphere are taking place in the form of virtually contemporaneous pulses over the vast territory of the Baikal region and, therefore, can be classified as "catastrophes of stresses."
