Many pressing problems of theoretical meteorology are associated with the concept of the vertical turbulent diffusion coefficient K, which is specified by the relation Q = K|partial deriv q/partial deriv z|. (1)rnHere, Q is the vertical turbulent flux of a substance transported by atmospheric turbulence in the vertical direction z, q is the concentration of this substance in the air. We can consider that q is either the concentration of the atmospheric admixture, air humidity, air temperature, or momentum. The velocity of vertical turbulent pulsations of the air that causes vertical turbulent diffusion is a characteristic of the turbulence. In practice, the standard deviation of the air velocity vertical pulsation denoted as σ_w, is used to describe this parameter. However, up to recently, there was no theory that could relate σ_w and K. This work is an attempt to develop such a theory.
