Age of Charnokitic Magmatism from the Obruchev Hills, Banger-Denman Area (East Antarctica)

The East Antarctic Shield as it appears today consists of fragments of the early Precambrian cratons surrounded by a collage of younger orogenic belts and accreted terrains making up the Wegener- Mawson Mobile Belt. From west to east the fragments of the early Precambrian crust involve the Napier Complex, granulites of Rauer Islands and Vestfold Hills, igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Bunger Hills-Denman Glacier area, and the Ruker Complex of the southern Prince Charles Mountains. The Bunger Hills-Denman Glacier area is located between longitude lines 98° E and 102° E (Fig. 1). Compared with other areas of East Antarctica, it has been quite poorly studied. The reconstruction of geological history of this area and its correlation with geological processes in other areas are, however, important to understand the evolution of the East Antarctic Shield in the Precambrian.
