Changes in the Duration of Synoptic Rainy Periods in Europe from 1950 to 2008 and Their Relation to Extreme Precipitation

During the last few decades, Europe has suffered from a substantial increase in average and extreme precipitation. Data on precipitation measured at sta?tions and derived from modeling demonstrate a similar trend [1-4]. In addition to the growth of the absolute value of extreme precipitation, there is also a substan?tial increase in the share of heavy showers relative to general precipitation [5-9]. In Europe, these changes average 3-4% per decade.
