Second Century of Service: University of Nevada, Reno system mines rich history

For much of the late 1800s, western Nevada was a hotbed of gold and silver mining activity. Prospectors rushed to the area in search of wealth, including to the Comstock Lode - one of the largest silver deposits ever discovered. Primarily due to its precious metal resources, Nevada was granted statehood by President Lincoln, who needed the gold and silver to help pay for the Civil War. Just a decade later in 1874, the Silver State's first university was founded.rnA land grant college, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) may be able to trace its roots all the way back to the state's early mining days, but the campus's district heating system has quite a history of its own. It'sieen in operation for 101 years. Upgraded over time to meet the changing needs of the campus, the UNR system enters its second century of service as a vital - and growing - part of campus infrastructure.
