Biomass Gasification: A viable option for campus district energy systems

When the brightest minds at North American universities look at smart energy solutions, biomass fuel sources increasingly get their attention. Before 2005, only a handful of universities in the U.S. or Canada had any kind of biomass plant. Since then, however, approximately 16 universities have switched to biomass fuels. Of these, approximately half have installed biomass gasification systems, which convert wood fuel to low-emission synthetic gas, or "syngas," that can be used in place of natural gas or fuel oil in district energy systems.
