Denver Zoo Exhibit to Tap Biomass Gasification

As part of the design for its upcoming Asian Tropics exhibit, the Denver Zoo is planning to install a biomass gasification system that will convert more than 90 percent of the zoo's waste into heat and power. Each day, the Denver Zoo produces an average 4,200 Ib of food waste and trash left from visitors plus 2,700 Ib of animal waste, which is currently composted. By converting these into usable energy, the zoo is expected to save $150,000 a year in energy and waste-hauling costs and reduce its landfill by 1.5 million Ib per year. Design of the new system is near-ing completion.
