The release last summer of Sony's HDW-F900 high-definition camcorder sent a message to the feature-film community: 24p is for real. And in less than one year, this 24fps progressive-scan format has converted at least four film-style television crews, including one led by veteran filmmaker Sidney Lumet, to video. Meanwhile, several other HD video cameras and lenses have brought a new visual language and clarity to documentary filmmaking. Even mighty Imax has been subjected to plausible side-by-side tests with HD footage.
