Over the past decade, many have been persuaded that "emotional intelligence" is an important element in shaping people's individual success and the quality of their contribution to the organizations where they work. This "intelligence" is largely understood to be the product of an individual's temperament, personal history and training. An alternative way of looking at what determines the levels of emotional intelligence that people display in the workplace is that it has to do with the interaction between who they are and the environment in which they find themselves. Is the emotional climate such that people can listen to, and connect with, each other? Or is it a place that makes them feel anxious and unable to think?
