Faced with providing consistent training to its 800,000 employees, the United States Postal Service (USPS) accepted the help of web-based distance learning (WBDL). In particular, the organization needed to make sure the 79,000-plus employees with responsibility for such tasks as serving on selection committees or assessing applications for jobs experienced the same training. You cannot get 79,000 people in the classroom at the same time, updated manuals might be outdated by the time they get printed and distributed, and if you are going to teach people face-to-face there is the problem of making sure there are enough trainers, not to mention picking up the tab for the traveling expenses for those thousands of journeys to and from the training sessions. A classic case of where the wonders of the internet can be harnessed to provide training courses for thousands of people, even those working in remote areas online at the same time. No waiting for a place on a course, no traveling time, just turn on and begin.
