Archibald Liversidge, FRS and T.W. Edgeworth David FRS, professors in the sciences at the University of Sydney between 1872 and 1923, had a profound influence on the university, the Royal Society of New South Wales, and on the history of Australian science. They were very different: Liversidge, a shy bachelor, little known to the general public; David, a charismatic figure whose activities made him a household name. However, they worked together effectively within the university, in science and technical education, and in the application of science to economic development. Their pioneering work is still bearing fruit today.
