We explore several opportunities created by a new approach to science, engineering and management: complex systems. By distinguishing between complex and complicated systems, we reflect on different design approaches, and discuss the advantages offered by guided self-organisation. Pointing out that several modern challenges are characterised by critical dynamics, cascading failures and non-trivial information flows, we attempt to highlight the importance of cross-disciplinary quantitative methods,.
