How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) improve the economic, societal and environmental well-being of Australia? I explore why AI is now able to take on a range of cognitive tasks. I discuss the technologi- cal challenges remaining to build intelligent machines. In addition, I identify some of the ethical and societal obstacles that this is, and will be, creating.
