Meiotic behaviour of a rcp (13q‐;14q+) translocation in heterozygous pigs

Meiosis in rcp (13q-;14q+) heterozygous boars and gilts was studied. Diakinesis/metaphase I was characterized by 17 bivalents and 1 quadrivalent. In the female, the quadrivalent was ring-shaped, while in the male 41.2% were ring-shaped and 58.8% were chain-shaped. Crossing-over in the interstitial regions was evident by the ring configuration and the asymmetrical chromatid arms at second metaphase. In the female, alternate or adjacent-1 type segregation was most frequent. Metaphase II stage in males was rare. These results are discussed in relation to the gametic products of rcp (13q-;14q+) heterozygotes as determined by the study of their embryos.
