Karyotypes of eight taxa of Hierochlo? (Gramineae)

Karyotypes are presented for Hierochloë australis 2n= 14, H. repens 2n = 28 + 2B, H. odorata ssp. odorata 2n = 28 and ssp. baltica 2n = 42, H. hirta ssp. hirta 2n = 56 and ssp. arctica 2n = 56, H. alpina ssp. alpina 2n = 56 and ssp. orthantha 2n = 58 and 63. Individual chromosomes could generally not be identified. Most chromosomes are metacentric. Only a few submetacentric chromosomes were observed, and one subtelocentric marker chromosome was found in a structurally heterozygous H. alpina ssp. orthantha plant.
