Ten enzymes from the two sibling species Thera obeliscata and T. variata were compared by means of starch gel electrophoresis. Only one enzyme indicated an absolute interspecific difference, whereas interspecific differences in allele composition of two allelomorphic enzymes were established. The allozyme variation of phosphoglucomutase and phosphoglucose isomerase in three populations of Thera obeliscata was analysed. No differences between the populations were found. In Thera variata only phosphoglucomutase shows allozyme variation. This was analysed in 12 populations. A diffuse geographic as well as a year to year pattern of variation was revealed. The year to year variation is explained as due to selection against the Pgm- 3,5 heterozygote, since this type has been found in deficit compared to Hardy-Weinberg ratios in all samples.
