Public Speaking

The COM 123 Public Speaking course is designed to teach the theory and practice of basic principles of public speaking, with emphasis on the compositional and presentational aspects of communication in formal speaking situations. COM 123 is a basic, freshman-level course that is typically required in the core curriculum of many undergraduate institutions. The National Communication Association (NCA) standards of public speaking competence provide the grounding for the course. As part of the course, students are asked to demonstrate mastery or excellence in following NCA communication competencies: 1) demonstrate excellence in oral and written communication; 2) organize and deliver speeches that are appropriate for the audience and occasion; 3) locate, evaluate, and cite credible research and sources; 4) engage in thoughtful reflection and dialogue with a group; and 5) use vocal variety and physical behaviors that heighten and maintain the interest of an audience.
