ThemainstayofeconomicactivityinCatQueCommune,HoaiDucDistrictofHaTayProvinceinVietnamisgotraising,whichistheproductionofpigletsbetween8to30kg,fillingagapbetweenthesow/pigletandmeatpigproductions.Aclusterofassociatedenterpriseshavedevelopedaroundthisgot-basedenterprisewhichincludethegotraisers,pigletsuppliers,feedandmedicinesuppliers,veterinarianservices,gotcollectors,andmanurecollectors.Therelationshipswiththeseassociatedenterprisesformthebasisofthecomplexenterprisestrategiesofthegotraisers,whichstrivetobalanceacomplexsetofissuesoffeed,growth,season,diseasecontrol,labour,credit,andmarketinginordertoensuretheprofitabilityandsustainabilityoftheenterprise.Thegotarefedarice-baseddiet,withoccasionalproteinconcentratetospeedupgrowthforseasonswhengotpricesarehigh;whileinferiorfeedisgivenwhenthereisaglutinthemarket.Diseasecontrolisasmuchrelatedtomanagementasitistomarketingstrategyandlabourrequirements.Tosellthewholelotofgotyieldslowerprofitandleadstounevenlabourrequirements,butitprovidestheopportunityforthoroughcleaningofthepigpensandabreakindisease;bothcontributetobetterhealthcondition.Sellinggotoncreditfostersrelationshipswiththecollectors,butalsocreatesacashflowproblemwhichinturnispassedontothefeedsupplierswhothenmustsellfeedtogotraisersoncredit.Thein-depthanalysisofthiscomplexsetofinterrelatedissuesprovidesthebasisforelaboratinganenterpriseplantoimprovethesystem.Oneresearchactivitythathasbeencompletedisatrialonmaizesubstitutionforriceandtheresultsshowedsignificantimprovementingrowthrate(372vs.332g/dayofdailyweightgain),reducedfeedcost(6,013vs.7,654vnd/kgweightgain-USD1=15,400vnd-),andhigherprofit(78,611vs.51,032vndpergot).Thediseasesurveyalsoidentifiedthemanagementareasthataffectthefrequenciesofillnesses,includingpigpendesignandflooring,livingspace,cleanliness(e.g.,bathingfrequencyandthoroughdisinfectionofpigpens),anddrinkingwatersource.
