HerbageofCratyliaargentea,Desmodiumvelutinum,Fleminigiamacrophylla,Leucaenadiversifolia,Canavaliabrasiliensis,Centrosemabrasilianum,Clitoriaternatea,Lablabpurpureus,StylosanthesguianensisandVignaunguiculatanbsp;fromtheCIAT(InternationalCenterforTropicalAgriculture)genebankwereassessedfortheirnutritionalvalueandin-vitrodigestibilityforpigsinordertopredicttheirpotentialasalternativeproteinsupplementinatropicalsmallholdercontext.Crudeprotein(CP)contentsrangedfrom137to257gkg-1drymatter(DM)(mean191gkg-1DM),althoughaconsiderableproportionofit,27%onaverage,wasboundtoneutraldetergentfiber(NDF).InterestinglevelsoflysinewerefoundinCratyliaargentea(14gkg-1DM)andLeucaenadiversifolia(13gkg-1DM),wherebythelatterwasalsohighintannicacidconcentration(49gkg-1DM)thuslimitingtheaminoaciddigestibility.Vignaunguiculatapresentedhighestin-vitroenzymaticdegradability(521gkg-1DM),whichevenincreasedina40:60mixturewithmaize.LowestdegradationwasobtainedwithFlemingiamacrophylla(248gkg-1DM),whilethemedianoftheforagesapproached390gkg-1DM.Itisconcluded,thatVignaunguiculataherbagemealhasthehighestpotentialtobesuccessfullyincludedinpigdiets,whileCratyliaargenteamealshouldequallybeassessedinvivo.
