Exotic hens under semi scavenging conditions in Bangladesh

Amodelforsemi-scavengingpoultryrearinghasbeendevelopedinBangladesh,whichisappliedwithconsiderablesuccesstothebenefitofruralpoorwomen.297landlessandmostlyilliteratewomenwhoparticipateintheBangladeshSmallholderLivestockprojectactedashostsinafieldtrialcomprising1272pulletsofeightbreedcombinationsfromfourhatches(MayAugustNovemberandJanuary)whichweretestedforeggproductioninthreeagro-ecologicalzones.Theobjectivesofthetrialwere:totestabreedingsystemwherehybridparentsareusedasgrandparentsforfemaleparents;andtocomparetheperformanceofdifferentbreedcombinationsundersemiscavengingconditions.TheresultsofthetrialshowedthatthecombinationRhodeIslandRedxFayoumihadthehighesteggproduction,lowestmortalityandhighestprofitperhen..However,noneofthecombinationsproducedtotheirgeneticpotentialaseggproductionperhen-daywas35-40percentandageoffirstegg32to34weeks.Inthisexperimenttheeffectoflocationwashigherthanthatofbreedcombinationandseason.Itisconcludedthatmanagementaspectswhichaccountforlocalvariationinfeedavailableforscavengingandsupplementationandreductioninmortalityareimportantfactorstoaddresstoimprovethetechnicalefficiencyofthemodel.
