Impact of smallholder livestock development project in some selected areas of rural Bangladesh

Thisstudyconductedin4districtsofBangladeshhasevaluatedtheimpactofinterventionsmadebytheSmallholderLivestockDevelopmentProject(SLDP)onsocio-economicconditionsofthepoorpeopleinruralBangladesh.Onethousandsamplehouseholdsfromdifferenttypesofbeneficiarygroupswereinterviewed.Itwasobservedthatthemembershipoftheprojecthasconsistedofpooranddisadvantagedwomenasdefinedintheeligibilitycriterion.Theprogrammehaspioneeredanumberofinnovationsrelatedtopoultryproductionandprovidedcredittogroupmembersfortheiradoptionandincomegeneration.Thishasensuredemploymentofpoorwomenandgeneratedincomeforthem.ThetotalnetincomeperhouseholdwasTaka398(1US$=Taka43.8)andtheaveragenetincomeperhouseholdfromSLDPactivitieswasTaka140perweek.TheSLDPincomewas35.1percentoftotalincomeofbeneficiaryhouseholdsinthestudyareas.Withtheincreaseinincome,originatingmainlyfromSLDPactivities,thebeneficiaryhouseholdsmadesubstantialprogressinsavings.ThetotalcumulativesavingsperbeneficiaryaftermembershipwasTaka1181,whichwasmadebyTaka413fromgroupsavingsandTaka768fromownsavings.Atthesametime,theconsumptionofallfooditemsespeciallymilk,meat,eggsandgrainsincreasedaftermembershipofSLDP.Theprojecthasensuredempowermentofwomeninthestudyareasandincreasedtheirparticipationindecisionmaking.Almostallbeneficiariesreportedthattheirsocio-economicstatushasimprovedaftertheirmembershipinSLDPand100percentofthebeneficiarieswantedtocontinueasmembersofSLDPinfuture.
