Theaimsofthisstudyweretoexaminethepossibilityofusingwholecashewappleandcashewapplewaste(aresiduefromfruitprocessing)asfeedfordairycowsbyensilingthemwithpoultrylitter.Thebasicmaterialwaseitherthewaste`(afterjuiceextraction)orthewholecashewapple.Fourtreatments(combinationswithpoultrylitter)witheachproductwerecompared.asfollows:100%cashewapplewaste(CAW)orcashewapple(CA),90%CAW(orCA)+10%poultrylitter(PL),80%CAW(orCA)+20%PLand70%CAW(orCA)+30%PLbasedonfreshweight.Thematerialswereensiledinglassjars(2.5litrescapacity).Therewere3replications(jars)ofeachtreatmentofwholefruitandwasteandofeachofthesamplingtimes,whichwereat0,3,7,15and30daysafterensiling.nbsp;ThepHfellrapidlyinthefirstthreedaysandcontinuedtofalluntilthe7thdaytoaconstantvalueofaround4.45.Totalsugarsalsowerereduceddramaticallyinthefirstthreedays(from12.2to1.9%inDM).Thesensoryevaluationshowedthatthesilagesfrom100%CAWor90%CAWand10%PLwereofacceptablequality(yellowcolour,nicesmell)andthosefrom80%and70%CAWwerenotacceptable(darkcolour,badodour).nbsp;Itisconcludedthatcashewapplefruitandcashewapplewaste(afterjuiceextraction)canbepreservedforlongtermusebyanaerobicensilingandthatthereappearedtobelittleadvantageinmixingthemwithpoultrylitterbeforeensiling.Theconversionofthesolublesugarsintoorganicacidsandalcoholmayhavenegativeeffectsonnutritivevalue.Feedingtrialsarenecessarytoevaluatethis.
