The introduction of low-cost polyethylene tube biodigesters on small scale farms in Vietnam

InordertoevaluatepolyethylenetubulardigesterdevelopmentinVietnam,interviewswerecarriedoutinThuanAndistrictandattwoextensioncentres.Dataofdesignparameters,gasproduction,economicaspects,farmers'participation,technicalproblemsandmethodologiesofbiogasdevelopmentwerecollected.Thetechnologywasappealingtotheruralpeoplebecauseofitslowcost,fastpayback,simplicityandpositiveeffectonpollution.Thefindingspointedtotheimportanceoffarmers'participationfortechnicalfeedback,plantmaintenance,plantrepairandteachingofotherfarmers.Thedisseminationofthetechnologyneedstheselectionofrealfarmerswithhighfueldemandsasdemonstrators,thesupportofacreditsystemforthepoorfarmersandstrengtheningfarmer-extension-scientistrelations.Follow-upresearchshouldbefocusedonon-farmstudies,particularlytheuseoftheeffluent(slurry).
