Influence of Gliricidia sepium restricted grazing on live weight gain of growing cattle in star grass pastures

TwoexperimentswerecarriedouttoevaluatetheinfluenceofrestrictedgrazingofthelegumetreeGliricidiasepiumonliveweight(LW)gainofgrowingcattleinStargrasspastures.ThreetreatmentswereevaluatedinExperiment1using18animalsof176kginitialLWwithacompletelyrandomizeddesign:(0)grazingpasturealone,(C)pastureplus1kg/dayofconcentrate(16.6%Nx6.25)and(G)pastureplusrestrictedgrazingfor2hours/dayofGliricidia(18.9-23.5%Nx6.25).Sixteenanimalsof124kginitialLWwereusedinExperiment2andonlytreatmentsCandGwereevaluated.Thepastureusedwasstargrass(6.0-7.1%Nx6.25)withrotationalgrazing.TheGliricidiatreesusedweretwoyearsoldandthemainstemwascutat50cmabovesoillevel.LWgainswere0.42,0.52and0.62kg/dayintreatments0,GandCofExperiment1and0.21and0.32kg/dayintreatments0andGofExperiment2.TheLWgainincrementsof100-110g/dayobtainedwithrestrictedgliricidiagrazingaresimilartotheresponsesobtainedwith0.5kg/dayofaconcentratesupplement.
