ThepurposeofthepresentstudywastoevaluatetheuseofleavesfromtheJackfruittree(Artocarpusheterophyllus),bananaplants(Musaspp),AcaciamangiumandTrichanteragiganteatreesassupplementstoabasaldietofricestrawandsugarcanetops,feedresourceswhicharewidelyavailableinNorthVietnamespeciallyinthewinterseason.Theleaveswerefedtolactatinggoatswhichwereallocatedtothetreatmentsfromthe4thtothe12thweekoflactation.Fromkiddinguntiltheendofthe4thweekthegoatswerefedastandarddietofGuineagrass(Panicummaximum)supplementedwith500g/head/dayofa15%proteinconcentrate.Duringthefirsttwoweeksthekidswerealwayswiththemother.Atthestartofthe3rdweekthekidswereseparatedandthedoesweremilkedoncedaily(07.00hr);thekidswereallowedtosuckfor30minutesaftermilkinginthemorningandagainintheafternoon(16.00hr)withoutpriormilkingofthedam.Duringthe4thweektheyieldwasmeasuredbyweighingthemilkproducedatmilkingandbyestimatingthemilkconsumedbythekidsbyweighingthembeforeandaftersuckling.Theyieldinthe4thweekwasusedascovariatetoadjusttheyieldduringtheexperiment.ThehighestmilkyieldswereobtainedfromgoatsfedleavesfromJackfruit(765ml/day)andAcaciamangium(736ml/day)whichdidnotdiffersignificantlyfromeachother.Bothweresuperiortobananas(676ml/day)whiletheTrichanteragiganteawastheworst(571ml/day).ThedoesgainedweightontheJackfruittreatment(1.85kgfrom7to12weeks)butlostweight(-1.24to-2.2kg)ontheothertreatments.ThegrowthratesofthekidswerelowestonAcaciamangium(14g/day)andrangedfrom48to60g/dayontheothertreatments.Itisconcludedthatadietofsugarcanetops,molasses-ureablockandleavesfromtheJackfruittree,withsmallamountsofricebran(200g/day)canberecommendedasabasaldietforlactatinggoatsandgrowingkids,especiallyduringthedrywinterseasonwhengrassesareinshortsupply.
