The need for a new energy standard and the configuration of a productive arrangement based on the use of biomass has been driving a series of research and innovations. The possibility of producing ethanol from lignocellulosic wastes is a great attraction for researchers, because difficulties, such as the need to increase the planted area to increase production and the high cost of raw material, cease to exist. The present work was guided by an exploratory research whose ideas and hypotheses pointed out the most promising current paths for the production of ethanol from lignocellulose.
