Chemical technologist Dr Ruud van Ommen (AS) has made the 2013 list of rising stars and young nanoarchitects in materials science of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Van Ommen coats nanoparticles to make them function more effectively as catalysts. He succeeded in coating little balls of titanium dioxide with nanoclusters of platinum. ESA wants to send a satellite to Jupiter's moons in 2022. In order to determine the best route, Guido de Croon (AE) and his colleagues at ESA developed a calculation method. This will help the satellite to choose the optimum route based on the continually changing positions of the celestial bodies. For this work the team received the prestigious Humies award.
