When my grandmother died, I inherited her piano. I hadn't played for almost twenty years, but suddenly the big oak instrument appeared in my living room. Even with three young children in the house, it immediately took pride of place. It wasn't long before I tried the stool for size. But not before opening the lid to take a peek at the hammers, the strings and the golden logo of the Wilhelm Schimmel Pianofortefabrik Braunschweig, "seit 1885".
