Seventy to 80 percent of all hydraulic-system failures are related to contamination, according to some component manufacturers. It doesn't seem like too much of a stretch, considering that the air on most construction sites is thick with dust large enough to damage valves and pumps. Dust, heat, water and the metal they scrape off of components are the most common contaminants in a hydraulic system. Heat and water are most common in machines working in hot or humid climates, environments that quickly plug radiators or under very poor maintenance. Solid contaminants can virtually be eliminated by maintaining cylinders and keeping hydraulic oil clean.
