When Construction Equipment editors do a field test that compares the perfor mance of a new hydraulic excavator with that of the model it replaces, the same question always comes to mind: How much better can the new one be? The question is prompted because the old machine, more often than not, seems already to be pushing the limit of technical refinement in areas such as hydraulic efficiency, electronic control, operator amenities and productivity.
