All-Electric Wolffkran Tower Builds San Francisco Skyscraper

The Wolff 700B luffing-jib tower crane at work on a new skyscraper in San Francisco, Calif., will eventually reach a tower height of 764 feet, but the tower will be tied to the building only at 10 points. The "extremely sturdy but comparatively slender 7-foot 7-inch tower sections" minimize the tie-offs required, says the crane's manufacturer, Wolffkran. Maxim Crane Works, L.P., owns the 700B, which is rented to the project's general contractor, Level 10 Construction. The crane has a rated maximum lift capacity of 110,230 pounds with a 3-fall hoist configuration and a maximum tip-load capacity of 36,380 pounds at a jib radius of 164 feet. The heaviest lift planned for the 700B is a 100,000-pound support column to be placed at a 46-foot radius. The fully electric 700B has a hoist speed of up to 623 feet per minute.
