By now, most operations using diesel-powered trucks and equipment are aware that new engine oils will soon be available for both. The new oils, identified as API (American Petroleum Institute) CK-4 and FA-4, were developed to address possible shortcomings in the current heavy-duty diesel oil, CJ-4, when used in the more hostile operating environments of engines running with the latest emissions-control systems. In addition, the formulation of FA-4 is aimed at improving fuel economy (and thus reducing greenhouse-gas emissions) for certain on-highway die-sels. Engine-oil manufacturers have all developed their proprietary formulations of CK-4 and FA-4, which will be officially available December 1, 2016.
