The Cat 814K wheel dozer is designed for applications such as utility work at mines, heavy civil-construction backfilling and grading work, as well as ground preparation and subbase work on airport and commercial projects. The 814K features a new sound-suppressed cab, refined power unit and transmission drive, and a centralized service-station configuration. The 814K is structurally designed to achieve multiple life cycles, says Caterpillar. Blade options include a 3.72-cubic yard straight blade, for high-production dozing on stockpile material and general earthmoving projects, and a 13.8-cubic yard coal blade. The upgraded cab uses isolation mounting and an air-suspension seat to minimize vibration, and sound levels in the cabin are 71 dB(A), compared with 78 dB(A) in the predecessor model. An optional sound-suppression package lowers sound levels to 70 dB(A). A new "fold-up" STIC (Steering/Transmission Integrated Control) armrest facilitates cab entry/exit, given that the steering-wheel console is now removed. Moving the STIC lever side to side steers the machine, and gear selection is controlled via a rocker switch.
