摘要

Every year, Robert Blendon and his team from Harvard survey the most important opinion polls in the nation to see where Americans stand. For many in the run up to the presidential election, there was no doubt that jobs were the main issue. And Donald Trump clearly exploited these concerns on almost a daily basis during his campaign. Voters did believe job losses were often the result of international trade, a constant Trump theme. They also widely believed lower taxes on American business would bring back jobs. Decidedly negative views of the economy were held, according to the polls, by those who voted or said they intended to vote for Trump. These issues were of particular importance to Republican voters and voters in key Midwest swing states. As we know, Trump won more Republican votes than did Mitt Romney in 2012. He is likely to continue to pursue his job creating proposals, essentially tariffs and immigration restrictions, however inefficient and wrongheaded many analysts believe they are. He couches reducing climate regulations as a job-creating measure. But the Democrats, this editor believes, should learn a lesson on how to direct their campaigns for office. Fight Trump's job plans with serious job proposals and social insurance programs of their own.
