Facilitation payments: culturally acceptable or unacceptably corrupt?

This paper has briefly highlighted the current global climate with regard to the issue of corruption and bribery. The negative economic, social and political consequences were highlighted alongside the growing awareness that these can have deleterious effects on business and multinational companies operating in corrupt environments. Given this growing consensus from academics to policy-makers, and a whole array of differing approaches to combating the prevalence of corruption, the question of why corruption continues, albeit in the guise of 'facilitation payments', was posed. Accordingly, the second half of the paper highlighted and evaluated some of the corporate arguments and corruption issues surrounding the operations of MNCs in foreign countries.
