Acute variceal bleeding: general management

Acute variceal bleeding has asignificant mortality which ranges from 5/100 to 50/100 in patients with cirrhosis~[1]. Overall survival is probably improving, because of new therapeutic approaches, and improved medical care. However, mortality is still closely related to failure to control haemorrhage or early rebleeding, which is a distinct characteristic of portal hypertensive bleeding and occurs in as many as 50/100 of patients in the first days to 6 weeks after admission et al~[2].
