Cost pressure is high in the industry, and therefore potential savings and optimization are always welcomed with open arms. The recent Craft Brewers Conference in Washington D.C. showcased a number of clever innovations and advancements designed to ease some of this pressure. We also have further recommendations for you in this issue: MALTING AND BREWING - Will craft malting become the next major ground-swell, much like the sustained craft beer wave whose repercussions are still sweeping the globe? Johannes Lauer sees the first ripples of activity among craft maltsters as the harbinger of a great deluge. In his article, he introduces a malting ! system conceived for the production of small-batch specialty malts (p. 119). - Would you grant other brewers or even breweries access to your brewhouse? L Unthinkable! At least it would have been until a little while ago. Gypsy brew- ers have ridden the turbulent upwelling of craft beer to the shores of Germany, though most seemed to have done so without any brewing equipment to speak of. However, gypsy brewers have shown that where there's a will, they'll find a way. Camba Bavaria and BrauKon have taken in these bre-whouse-less nomads and have furnished them with a means to practice their art at the Camba Old Factory in Gundelfingen.
