Growing biomass, together with carbon capture and sequestration, is seen as one of the very few options to reach negative emissions and to remove CO-(2) from the atmosphere so that the 2℃ global temperature target can be attained [1]. It is anticipated that this technology would rely mostly on second-generation biomass in the near future. However, until now, only first-generation biomass has been used, in particular biofuels such as ethanol from corn in the USA, sugarcane in Brazil and biodiesel from oilseeds in Europe. Biofuel production has become a popular climate change mitigation option as it generates carbon uptake from the atmosphere [2].
