Because ASHRAE's nearly 40-year-old headquarters building was in need of substantial repairs, a Presidential Ad Hoc Building Committee was established in 2004 to review the best options for the facility. In 2005 the ASHRAE Board of Directors voted to adopt sustainability as the central theme for the Strategic Plan and committed to making the headquarters decision a significant statement in that program. Consistent with that, the Board decided to renovate and expand the existing headquarters building.
