Office Buildings Offsetting Costs With Efficiency

Managers and owners of downtown office buildings have largely offset recent increases in energy costs with low- and no-cost energy-efficiency strategies. This was the assessment of Henry H. Chamberlain, president and chief executive officer of the Building Office and Managers Association (BOMA), in his state of the industry address at the association's annual meeting. More than 4,000 members attended the event June 22-24, which included educational sessions, special speakers, and a products and services showcase. "The relative stability of utilities expenses in office buildings despite the rise in energy costs tells us no- and low-cost energy efficiency strategies and initiatives are working," Chamberlain said. "In addition, an overwhelming 82% of property professionals said greening their portfolios was a priority. And, nearly two-thirds of respondents have allocated funds to green initiatives."
