Portsmouth High School Receives Major Facelift

Portsmouth is the second oldest city in New Hampshire with a major shipbuilding center dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Great care has been taken to preserve the community's historic significance while adding contemporary conveniences. That effort continues today as school board officials approved a more than $36 million budget to help bring Portsmouth high School into the 21 st century, enlarging the 1957 facility from 240,000 sq. feet to 324,000. Surrounded by classic New England beauty and Victorian/Colonial homes, Portsmouth's fully accredited high school consistently ranks among the best in the state. But evolving building codes required that substantial improvements be made to modernize instruction areas and achieve code compliance. Improvements included asbestos removal, the installation of central air conditioning, new phone/data networks, updated windows, energy efficient electrical/ plumbing systems, and other educational advancements.
