How important is extra reliability? Designs that maximize reliability may be at odds with other criteria, including energy efficiency. Therefore, there may be additional first costs and increased annual operating costs. Is this acceptable? Can the project budget support the reliability improvements? Identifying the costs involved helps pare down a list of wants into a more realistic list of needs. Doing this early helps establish a clear design path.rnConsider an apartment building where fan coils are installed in each guestroom and a single hot water boiler is used. Single points of failure exist throughout this design, but it is commonly used and is considered acceptable.
